Cambra system in patients awaiting hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant and high caries risk
2016
Background Recent times have witnessed a significant increase in the number of patients affected by problems related to oncological treatment Aims of this study is to evaluate dental affectation among patients awaiting hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant (HPCT), and they showed high caries risk, so it should establish a protocol prior to transplantation. Material and methods The study included 72 patients due for HPCT. Clinical and radiological explorations were performed and oral photos taken. The amount of caries, missing teeth and fillings were registered for each patient. CAO, DMFS and Restoration Indices were calculated. Results 83% of patients presented caries. 48 patients (67%) …
Correlation between dental caries experience and mutans streptococci counts using saliva and plaque as microbial risk indicators in 3-8 year old chil…
2015
Objectives: Determination of the relative amounts of mutans streptococcus in both saliva and plaque and to study its correlation with dental caries in children. Study Design: The study comprised of 60 children aged 3-8 years divided into 2 groups (30 children in each): Group A- Children with more than 4 carious teeth and Group B- Children without caries. Saliva and plaque was collected from children of both the groups with the help of Dentocult SM strip test kit (Orion Diagnostic). Following incubation, mutans streptococcus scores (from 0 to 3) in each individual was evaluated and compared between both the groups. Results: On comparing the two groups, mean ± SD of saliva score and plaque sc…
Dentin-pulp complex reactions in conventional and radiation-related caries: A comparative study
2019
Background Radiation-related caries (RRC) is one of the most significant oral toxicities of head and neck radiotherapy (HNRT); however, the potential of radiation to directly cause harmful dentin and pulpal effects and impair response to caries progression is controversial. Material and Methods Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize the reactions of the dentin-pulp complex in teeth affected by RRC. Patients and methods: Twenty-two carious teeth extracted from 22 head and neck cancer (HNC) patients were divided into control (conventional caries; n=11) and irradiated (RRC; n=11) groups and paired matched by dental homology, clinical patterns of caries progression following the P…
Oral health and oral health-related quality of life in patients with oral dystonia indicates their need for dental special care.
2020
Background This retrospective study aimed in the evaluation of oral health and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients with oral dystonia (OD). Material and Methods Seventeen patients with OD (Meige Syndrome: n=11, Oromandibular Dystonia: n=6) were included, of which seven were examined again at three months after botulinum toxin injection. OHRQoL was assessed by the German short form of oral health impact profile (OHIP G14). Within oral examination, dental parameters, remaining teeth and periodontitis severity were assessed. A matched healthy control (HC) was composed for comparison. Results The OD patients had significantly more carious teeth (0.94 ± 1.75 vs. 0; p<0.01), …
Holes in teeth - Dental caries in Neolithic and Early Bronze Age populations in Central Germany.
2015
This study provides diachronic insight into the epidemiology of carious defects in teeth of Neolithic and Early Bronze Age populations in Central Germany over a period of 4000 years. The data were retrieved from skeletal remains uncovered at 21 sites throughout the Middle Elbe-Saale region (MES), comprising a total of 494 individuals with preserved teeth. The data generated were examined for age- and sex-related differences in order to gain information about the dietary habits and socio-economic structures of the period with the goal of identifying potential diachronic changes. The results indicated that dietary habits changed over the course of the Neolithic period: the prevalence of carie…
